Real Examples
These days just because you are teaching early elementary school doesn't mean those kids aren't familiar with technology and how to use it. Using blogs in the classroom to have students discuss activities that they did hands on in the classroom is a great way to utilize technology and to draw them into what you're doing. For example you do a science experiment in class, you can have the students post their findings and results on a blog and comment on other blogs and discus the results, or why they came to different conclusions. Another way to incorporate blogs into and elementary school class would be to replace English journals with blogs so that you know the kids are participating and parents can see the progress of their children.

Parents would get a kick out of being able to read their child's journals. The traditional journal-writing never allowed parents to read what their children wrote, but blogs make it accessible to them. I also liked your idea of posting science experiment results online. This way, when reflecting on how their experiment went, they can see how others went about it and what they learned.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. Not all people understand that kids do understand how to use technology at the young age. They may or may not be able to understand everything they are doing with the technology but they still know how to use it. That would be funny to have to parents read the kids journals. They would get to see what their kids think and will get a kick out of it.
ReplyDeleteI like how you mentioned using blogs with science. Great ideas!
ReplyDeleteI like the mention of parents being able to view the blog. I think that using a blog within the classroom and giving parental access is a good way to keep the parents up to date in what is going on in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kylie, getting parents invovled is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteAs a parent I would cherish my child's blog posts. as a teacher it would be fantastic to have as a memory of your classes. Teaching a child to journal their thoughts in a blog is beneficial in so many ways!
ReplyDeleteI think that posting comments or discoveries about a science project is a really good idea. This allows the students to learn new things that maybe they didn't learn from their experiment.
ReplyDeleteAllowing parents to see their child's work is a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI agree that more and more young children today are learning how to use technology; many have their own cell phones, tablets, and access to laptops. They are eager to become involved in the technological world that they see being used all around them. I also think that using blogs to keep a journal is a great idea for the students, teachers, and parents to all keep track of a student's progress.
ReplyDeleteI like that you are making the students think more into what their project is about.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Elementary students would at least me vaguely familiar with technology when they start. I like your idea for having them keep blogs instead of English journals because then you could instantly see their work when it's updated.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of the students posting what they thought about the experiment on the blog, and I think that blogging instead of using journals would be really fun for them!
